This evening of modern electronic world-music and dub is brought to you by Washington, D.C.-based artist owned-and-run label Rhythm and Culture Music and features a multimedia experience like no other!
Lancaster’s own Second Sky plays a blend of trip-hop and chillwave with global influences like classical Indian music, Middle-Eastern music and Afrobeat. Opening the night are DJ sets from Thomas Blondet and Farid, both resident DJ’s at the Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington, DC.
Second Sky will be performing songs from their forthcoming album Touching the Surface, which is due out this summer on Rhythm and Culture Music.
Best of all, this will be a live concert-video shoot with hometown A/V experts, Meteor Tower.
Second Sky is the trio of Billy Medina, Wes DiIorio and Bill Lascek-Speakman. The sound they create blends past with future, and organic with electronic.
Based in Dub and Trip-Hop, Second Sky mixes elements of Soul, Pop, Middle-Eastern, Afrobeat, and Indian music styles (among others) into something that always manages to come out sounding distinctly Second Sky.
Though only three members comprise the core of the group, Second Sky regularly employs the talents of friends from home and abroad to contribute to both their studio productions and live performances, including sitarist Harry Payuta and Second Sky’s regular horn section of Todd Fulginiti, Darnell Scott and Alex Banias.
Second Sky is known for their attention to both quality songwriting, as well as creating lush, psychedelic soundscapes. Regular collaborations with a variety of artists including label-mates Thomas Blondet and Farid, continually broaden their ever evolving sound. The band has also remixed work by artists including Thievery Corporation, Cornershop, and Balkan Beat Box, producing dynamic recreations for the dancefloor, the lounge and the living room alike.
The band’s drummer/producer Bill Lascek-Speakman explains; “Remixing gives us a chance to more fully explore some of our favorite genres like Bhangra, Samba, or Soundtrack Music to name a few, while working with some of our favorite artists”.
This fusion comes naturally to Billy, Wes, and Bill, who revel in the sounds of classic Bollywood soundtracks and early electronic music. The subsequent effect is a sonic world of sultry beaches, thrilling car chases, exotic scenery, and lost scenes from imaginary films.
Ultimately, the band looks to share it’s love of all forms of music with their friends and audiences worldwide; creating more than a sound, but a complete experience through rhythm and culture.
Thomas Blondet is known for his skill as both a producer and a DJ based in Washington, DC. His tracks reflect the ease with which he moves from genre to genre when he mixes sounds in his studio and his remixes successfully take on the challenge of incorporating international melodies with steady beats that his followers can dance to.
Starting his career as a DJ in the 1990s dance music scene in Washington, DC, Thomas has infused just about every type of beat-oriented genre such as deep house, speed garage, drum’n’bass, hip-hop, reggae, and dub with Arab, Latin, Indian, Balkan, Kurdish and Caribbean influences. This musical aptitude has served him well both in the studio and the DJ booth as today he maintains a Sunday night residency at DC’s headquarters of everything organic, Eighteenth Street Lounge.
Through his label Rhythm & Culture, Thomas Blondet has released the European Coaster EP and chilltempo Echo Chamber EP. He has since released several hand-crafted remixes of music by Balkan Beat Box, Nickodemus, Sola Rosa, Mr. Confuse and Fort Knox Five.
Look out for upcoming remixes, tracks and live DJ sets by the man who never stops working and doesn’t set limits on his level of creativity.
