An all out musical experience
September 25, 2015 · 8:00pm
It’s a night of reggae and soul with Nappy Riddem. Plus, music from Appalachian Gypsy Tribe and DJ/VJ sets from Aortic Valve
Since releasing their debut album on Fort Knox Recordings in 2011, NAPPY RIDDEM has been busy touring nationwide and releasing a string of remixes, transforming itself into an uplifting and conscious reggae band that is funky enough to pack the dancefloor. Started by Mustafa Akbar and Rex Riddem, NAPPY RIDDEM is now joined in the studio and on stage by drummer Jon Modell as part of a six piece live band.
In 2013 Nappy Riddem released “The Rock Steady EP” and was awarded “Best Reggae Recording” by the Washington Area Music Association, in 2014. Nappy Riddem stepped out of the studio to focus on touring. They’ve toured north, south, east and west. The Riddem crew had the pleasure of supporting the English Beat, Go-Go rockers Experience Unlimited, Lee Scratch Perry, and Bob Marley’s Legendary Guitarist Junior Marvin. Junior Marvin also selected Nappy Riddem to mentor and tour with him as his backing band during their California tour. The Highlight of which was headlining Joshua Tree Music Festival. Nappy Riddem’s performances meld Reggae, Rock, and Soul together into their unique brand of “Dancehallfunk”
Appalachian Gypsy Tribe
The Appalachian Gypsy Tribe sound transcends the spectrum of music from one end to the next. Their creative songwriting touches down on multiple genres before soaring off again on a psychedelic sound craft. The musicianship has been building for years, and now it has come together as a new sensation of improvisation in the Pennsylvania music scene
Appalachian Gypsy Tribe began playing together in July of 2012. Since then, AGT has exploded into Pennsylvania venues and festivals; gaining momentum and expanding their family base with a wide range of music styling and infectious songwriting. With each song, AGT brings a fresh and new atmosphere to the table. Their compositions are carefully layered with thick harmonies, intricate musical movements, deep rooted stories, and uplifting lyrics. Improvisation moves one song into the next, leaving a surprise around every corner.
There is a strong sense of “family” in the group which helps drive their art and inspire one another. AGT has made many transformations since the beginning, always growing and moving forward with their music. The band is fronted by vocalist Emily Newman. Her powerful voice gives life to the lyrics and propels the music for the band. Guitarists Asa Wilson and Travis Mason steer the jams with their innovative lead/rhythm guitar work. Andrew Bodogh lays down the atmosphere with psychedelic synth swells and catchy keyboard lines; Bass player Josh Tacker digs deep to release his grooves while the beats flow effortlessly from drummer TJ Zellers and percussionist Jose Teran.
With only two years under their belt, Appalachian Gypsy Tribe has found themselves on many festival bills (May Flora Fest, Zucchini Moon, Woodstock Reunion, Boogie In the Bungalow, Celebration of Life, Carpe Noctem, Cosmic Jam, Still Meadow Revue, On The Rise) as well as on the stage of numerous popular night clubs and venues (North Star Bar, River Street Jazz Cafe, The Chameleon Club, Tellus 360, The Legendary Dobbs, The Holy Hound, The Funhouse, Pearly Bakers, Pickering Creek Inn, The WInner’s Circle). AGT has sharred the stage with acts including Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Ryan Montbleau Band, Consider the Source, The Mantras, The Breakfast, Splintered Sunlight, The Underwater Sounds, Flux Capacitor, Dr. Slothclaw, Still Hand String Band, Mysterytrain, and Out of the Beardspace… as well as bringing in the 2015 New Year with Melvin Seals and JGB AND The New Riders of the Purple Sage!
With the recent release of Appalachian Gypsy Tribe’s self-titled debut studio album, the members of the band are full of energy and excitement, which manifests in their sound. AGT is ready to follow wherever the music may lead.
