The Showcase w/ Steve Patterson featuring Jessica Smucker
Music for Everyone, Steve Patterson, and Tellus360 are excited to bring you the 2015 season of The Showcase!
The art of the Singer Songwriter is featured in this unique series that brings artist and audience together to enjoy new, original music in an intimate, listening-room setting. This year we will feature nine songwriters in the headliner spot January through September. They will be competing for one of four spots in a sing-off competition to be held in October. The four artists who bring in the biggest audiences for their headliner event will make it to the finals, and there, the audience will vote for their favorites!
Thanks to a generous grant from Sid and Jan the artists who make the sing-off will be competing for substantial cash prizes.
We expect that October 21 show to be sold out. Proceeds will benefit Music for Everyone.
Our April featured artist is Jessica Smucker. Opening the evening will be Steve Ward.
Jessica Smucker never meant to become a serious songwriter. For much of her life, she sang for fun and dabbled on the piano, but her real passions were poetry and nonfiction writing. She published numerous poems and essays in magazines and journals during her twenties, but as time went by she increasingly found herself turning to the piano for relaxation. Moving her fingers over the keys seemed to draw out words from a different place within her – a deeper, yet more effortless place.
Once she had written a body of songs, it took her a few years to find the will and the courage to put them out into the world. Now, seven years into her music career, she still thinks of herself as a writer first – and a reluctant performer. But audiences experience her voice as a sincere and captivating embrace – the perfect sonic match to her emotionally eloquent lyrics.
Jessica has performed all over the Eastern U.S. and has won several national songwriting contests including the Connecticut Folk Festival Song Competition (2013) and SolarFest ‘s Singer/Songwriter Showcase Competition (2010). She has opened for notable acts like Cheryl Wheeler and The Kennedys, shared festival stages with Patty Larkin, Catie Curtis, Dar Williams, Antje Duvekot and others, and co-billed with up-and-comers like Heather Maloney and The Stray Birds.
Jessica recently released her second full-length album, Tumbling After.
Steve Ward first became known in the late ’90s as part of the power pop trio Cherry Twister, and later as a solo artist, releasing two albums, Opening Night and See and Be Seen, in the 2000s. After taking some time off from recording, Ward, along with bassist and longtime collaborator Joe Pisapia, keyboardist Matt Thomas, and drummer Paul Murr, formed a new recording project based on Ward‘s thoughtful and intricately melodic pop songwriting. Recorded and produced by the band at Ward‘s barn studio in Marietta, Pennsylvania, Fauna Flora‘s lushly arranged, self-titled debut was released in April 2014, followed by their first live shows later that summer.
