Book Launch: Hegemony How-To, by Jonathan Smucker

“As the world faces the horrors of a Trump presidency, many good people are asking, ‘What can I do?’ Jonathan Smucker’s book provides an urgent field manual for answering that question.”

—Jeremy Scahill

author of Blackwater and Dirty Wars

“Smucker brings hard-won wisdom, theoretical heft, and a welcoming style to this book, helping us think through the most important question of our time: how do we build enough collective power to not only demand a better world, but actually create one?”

—Naomi Klein

author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine

Written by Lancaster County native, Jonathan Smucker, the new book Hegemony How-To: A Roadmap for Radicals is a practical guide to political struggle for a generation that is deeply ambivalent about questions of power, leadership, and strategy. Hopeful about the potential of today’s burgeoning social movements, long-time grassroots organizer Jonathan Smucker nonetheless pulls no punches when confronting their internal dysfunction. Drawing from personal experience, he provides deep theoretical insight into the all-too-familiar tendency toward self-defeating insularity and paralyzing purism. At the same time, he offers tools to bridge the divide between social justice values and political strategies, tools that might just help today’s movements to navigate their obstacles—and change the world.

This is the official release event for the book. There will be opening music (check back for details) followed by a discussion with Jonathan about the book and about this political moment — and what everyday people can do. Finally, there will be a book signing.

Jonathan Smucker is the Director of Beyond the Choir and has worked for more than two decades as an organizer and strategist in grassroots social movements. His writing has appeared in The GuardianThe NationThe Sociological Quarterly, and elsewhere. He lives in Lancaster.
