LIACS Meeting – The Duffy’s Cut Massacre: 1832-Present

The Lancaster Irish American Cultural Society will meet on Sunday, January 23rd at 1:00 PM at TellusS 360. Following a brief business meeting, Matt Patterson, a Lancaster Irish American Cultural Society member, will give a presentation on the Duffy’s Cut Massacre which occurred in 1832. Matt is a Lancaster native and a Navy veteran who studied forensic dentistry at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida and at the former Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D. C. Matt was an integral part of the project in giving his expertise analyzing the partial jaw bone that was discovered at the Duffy’s Cut mass grave site in Chester County.

Matt will speak about the conditions in Ireland and in the U.S. for Irish immigrants in 1832, as well as Phillip Duffy and the building of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad.
He will discuss the 1832 Cholera Epidemic, the massacre cover-ups and the intrigue. He will also discuss the ongoing work of Bill and Frank Watson who began the Duffy Cut Project, from inception in 2002 to present. He will review what has been learned and how the archaeological investigations continue and have expanded. All are welcome to attend.
