Coffee, Craft Beer, Cocktails, & Community

by Jess Steffy, Co-owner, Square One Coffee Roasters

I’ve been going to Kenya for the last 6 years to visit many of the coffee farmers who grow the coffee we purchase at Square One Coffee Roasters. But for the last 5 years, I’ve also been fortunate enough to combine my coffee trips with visits to spend time with the fantastic staff and children at Horizon’s Micro Community in the small town of Kitale in Western Kenya.

Horizon is a nonprofit based in Lancaster, PA dedicated to rescuing and empowering orphaned children through a Micro Community model. Over the years, I’ve watched the Micro Community and the organization itself blossom into an innovative, sustainable force, continually raising the standard of care for some of the world’s most vulnerable people: orphaned children.

I’m a big fan of Horizon because their Micro Community model is one that I could truly see scaling to many other parts of the world. There are no quick and easy solutions to the orphan crisis, but their approach is one that I’m proud to put my money and my support behind.

If you want to learn more about what empowering orphaned children and the Micro Community model is all about while sipping a delicious cocktail or IPA, come out to “Empower the Orphaned” at Tellus360 on Thursday from 6-9pm. At the event, we’ll be debuting not one, but two collaborative drinks:

  • Empowered IPA is a delicious IPA from St. Boniface infused with Square One Coffee’s Kenya Rioki coffee. It’s citrusy, juicy, and a bit creamy without being too heavy.

  • Kenyan Coffee Tonic is made with Thistle Finch Distillery’s Market Alley gin, Square One Coffee’s Kenya Rioki flash brewed iced coffee, lime, bitters and tonic. It’s a refreshing and energizing twist on a classic Gin and Tonic.

These are both limited releases for this event, and Square One couldn’t be more proud to partner with St. Boniface and Thistle Finch, two fantastic local companies who not only make some of our favorite things, but who also care about making the world a better place. And best of all, Horizon will receive 50% of proceeds from the sale of these two drinks at the event!

So come out to Tellus360 on Thursday night to learn more about how you can get involved with this inspiring organization while enjoying tunes by DJ Salinger and live music by Mike McMonagle.

Cheers,
~Jess
