Mother Nature

By joe devoy
Written on kayak out the back
As I sat still in the calm
Protected from the roaring gale
They floated towards me in procession
Like funeral boats
All honoring their maker
A sea of upturned leaves
Each one on fire with the colors of the fall
Wind playing taps in my head
As the heron performed the flyover
I stiffened my chest and saluted
Mother Nature.
