Tellus360 Announces Plans for Music, Arts and Special Events Venue For Downtown Lancaster

Reclaimed wood and eco-friendly gift retailer unveils liquor license, music venues, organic food bar, recording studio and events space

LANCASTER, May 14, 2013 – Tellus360 – the reclaimed wood furniture and eco-friendly, recycled and upcycled gifts retailer – unveiled today plans to renovate its downtown Lancaster space into a liquor-licensed music, arts and special events venue. The news was delivered to local and regional media at a press conference held on Tellus360’s 10,000-square-foot green roof at 24 East King Street.

With construction scheduled to begin later this month, the Amplification Project will overhaul the building’s interior, transforming the 8,000-square-foot street-level retail space, 9,000-square-foot second floor, green rooftop and basement level into a mixed-use events and entertainment complex featuring four music and special events venues, a music recording studio, multiple art galleries and a food bar serving locally sourced and organic foods.

“With the live music and community events we’ve already held at Tellus360, we decided it was time to invest more fully into our ability to properly promote music and art in its many forms,” says Tellus360 owner Joe Devoy. “Lancaster has some of the best artists and musicians in the world, and we’re excited to provide them another venue to showcase their talents.”

A 500-person capacity space featuring high-input touring acts, as well as a 150-capacity tavern featuring acoustic acts, will occupy the first floor with sound equipment provided by Clair Global from Lititz, PA. A newly installed mezzanine level will feature an organic food bar prepared by The Scarlet Runner from Lancaster. All furniture will be designed and built by Tellus360’s workshop, located in Lancaster City.

The retail operation – including a showroom with custom kitchen and reclaimed wood furniture displays – will move to the previously undeveloped second floor. Also featured on the second floor is a 200-capacity listening room and events space, as well as Gallery360 – Tellus360’s in-house art gallery featuring rotating art exhibitions and consignment items from Lancaster-based artists.

Additionally, Tellus360 will host theater performances, educational lectures and creative workshops, with space available for corporate events, wedding receptions and other private events.

About Tellus360:

While today’s event was for many their first time visiting Tellus360, there were certainly some familiar faces in the crowd (looking at you, Bill from Fox43, Jason from Wood Stove House and Yoder from Fly Magazine….). Each were given a press pack on a wooden USB drive loaded with press releases, background info and photos.

We kicked things off at 11am with Joe giving a quick background on Tellus360. Mairtin followed up and gave a rundown on where we are going: live music, theater, workshops, community events, art exhibitions, organic food – the whole 9… The group then embarked on a tour of the building where they saw room by room the transformations that construction will bring (check out this neat photo that FIG Magazine posted on their Instagram account).

Finally, we wrapped up with a delicious lunch catered by Hilary and Ben from The Scarlet Runner. From fresh-picked greens from Ben’s garden in Strasburg (picked this morning!) to locally sourced meats to a brilliant vegan sandwich, we got a preview of the organic, locally sourced menu that The Scarlet Runner will be serving at Tellus360 once we are up and running.

All in all, it was a great day, and a wonderful opportunity to meet and develop relationships with our local media. Stay tuned for more info!

We’ve long been big fans of TEDTalks, but this segment just about blew us away. Here at Tellus360 HQ, we’re constantly seeking out new ways to cut down on our consumption at the store, from using only glass drinking cups and washable plates at our events on down to implementing a digital means to replacing our reliance on business cards (more on that to come…). After all, what good is preaching the reuse/recycle/reclaim gospel if we don’t live it ourselves?!

Well here’s a four-and-a-half-minute segment that will, with any luck, forever change your paper towel usage habits. Seriously. Who knew just how simple it could be?

What it all comes down to, is just a little shake and fold, friends. It’s kind of fun, too!

This Sunday, May 12, is Mother’s Day.

Now just because you don’t have a present yet for your Mom doesn’t mean that you are an unappreciative, unloving, uncaring son/daughter. But it DOES mean that you do not, in fact, have a present yet for your Mom.

That’s where we come in.

We’ve got something for Moms of all types! Reclaimed wood cheese boards for the culinary types; recycled flip-flop bracelets for the hip Moms; Patagonia backpacks for the outdoorsy types; handmade jewelry, wooden watches and wooden sunglasses for the fashionistas; eco-friendly candles and decorative wooden bowls for the interior design buffs… The list goes on.

Stop by the store this week and browse around. And if you can’t make up your mind, a store gift card is sure to do the trick!

Sincerely,

We’re kidding, obviously. BUT, we are super excited about these giant speaker horns that the construction crew from across the street hooked us up with yesterday. Rumor has it that they were previously used as air raid sirens as they sat perched atop the building that Fulton Bank is renovating and expanding into.

We couldn’t bear to see them just get thrown in the trash, so we asked if we could have them. And what will we use them for, you may ask? Well, that isn’t quite so clear yet, but rest assured, you’ll be seeing and – after yesterday’s successful test run in hooking them up to our stereo here in the store – hearing from them soon enough.

Stay tuned…

(And a big thanks to our neighbors at Fulton Bank and the construction crew for saving them for us. All 8 of ‘em…….)

We have a crystal ball stowed away in the basement.

Seriously.

It told us that the Shovels and Rope concert last August was destined to sell out months before we even booked the band. It showed us just how rowdy our two nights with The Districts was going to get. It even warned us against agreeing to host a polka Justin Bieber cover band (that was close).

Before finalizing our plans for the Amplification Project some months ago, we took a peak in the ol’ crystal ball, and what we saw sealed the deal. In short – we’ve got a whole lot of good times in store. Great bands, up-and-coming singer-songwriters, local favorites, Irish jam sessions and even a month-long residency with Mumford and Sons. (Details on that last one were a bit hazy.)

But that’s all after construction.

So to gear up for what’s to come, we felt it fitting to throw one last hurrah to celebrate what’s been. That’s why we’re hosting a special First Friday concert with acclaimed Boston-based singer-songwriter Heather Maloney tomorrow night (tickets available here), followed by one more TableTop Session with indie rock-n-Rhodes trio Younger Me and singer-songwriter Josh Albright (details here). Both shows are BYOB and guaranteed to be a good time

The crystal ball told us so.

Tellus360 Owner Named to Top 50 Irish-American Small Business List

LANCASTER, May 2, 2013 – The Irish Echo newspaper recognizes Joe Devoy, owner of Tellus360, as one of the top 50 Irish-American small business owners in the country. Devoy received the Irish Small Business 50 “Business Excellence Award” at a gala dinner on April 12 at The Manhattan Club at Rosie O’Grady’s in New York along with 49 other Irish-American business owners and entrepreneurs.

A native of County Waterford in Ireland, Devoy came to the United States on a soccer scholarship at Merchyhurst University in Erie, PA, in the late 1980s. In addition to his ownership of Tellus360 – a retail store, community hub and arts/music venue specializing in reclaimed wood, upcycled, recycled and environmentally friendly gifts – Devoy is the president of Maryland-based ARA Construction Corporation.

With Tellus360, Devoy aims to promote a simple, low-waste, sustainable lifestyle. In addition, he has led the charge to support international nonprofit agencies like Saprinu, an organization working to provide education and job opportunities to rural Nepal, and the Duffy’s Cut initiative.

I am so happy to introduce this month’s exhibit in Gallery360, Literarily: Design & the Written Word. This concept for an exhibition has been in the works (in my mind) for a long time now, as a fusion of two of my most longstanding passions: art and reading. I’ve found that “What are you reading lately?” is a question that comes up consistently in my conversations with fellow artists and art lovers, so finally the time came to pose that question to the artist community.

What are you reading? What have you read that you can’t forget? What piece of writing is so important that you had to create something, design something, build something, find a way to scream it from the rooftops? As always, I ask and the art world answers my call! I was so pleased to have an inbox full of literature-inspired artwork to choose from, and I thank each and every person who submitted work to this show. As always, it was a daunting task to make the selections, not only of which work best encapsulated the theme but how each piece fit in relation to all of the others. The influences were excitingly vast: found poetry, Slaughterhouse Five, journaling, typography, Darwin, collage, Arabian Nights, destroyed books, Aristotle, even the personal writing of the artist.

With this many words available to you on display, do you need too many more from me about them?! With ArtWalk just around the corner, the opportunity to showcase a wide variety of motivated and inspired artists while bringing to fruition a theme I’ve believed in for some time now has been my pleasure. I encourage you all to join us through May 11th and find your own inspiration to share!
